Day 2 - Munich & its Christmas Markets
Today we take the train to Munich, Bavaria's capital. Here you are free to visit the city's fabulous Christmas Markets. The 'Christkindlmarkt' is the traditional market, dating back to the 14th century, and is set at the foot of the neo-Gothic Town Hall and the twin domed Church of Our Lady, the city's main landmark. This market offers regional gifts from across Bavaria, such as ornate wood carvings from Oberammergau and fantastic glassware from the Bavarian Forest. Munich is also home to the Kripperlmarkt, which is a delight to explore as it boasts one of the world's largest nativity scenes. (B,D)
Day 3 - Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Leaving Langenau by coach, today we head to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the highlight of the 'Romantic Road'. Arguably one of Germany's most beautiful towns, Rothenburg's historic centre is characterised by quaint alleys, cobbled squares and half-timbered houses, all surrounded by the city gates and complete medieval town walls. We enjoy time at leisure to explore the pretty town and its Christmas Market. The 'Reiterlesmarkt' is one of Germany's oldest markets, and is also widely regarded as one of its most picturesque. The market is held in the atmospheric town square, which is illuminated and wonderfully decorated for the Christmas season. Here shoppers can find delicious regional delicacies and shop for festive favourites. (B,D)
Day 4 - Ulm Christmas market
We travel by train to nearby Ulm today, where we enjoy free time to explore. Be sure to visit Ulm Minster, which is famed for having the tallest church tower in the world at 530 feet (162m). The city also boasts many historic buildings, such as the fantastic 14th century Town Hall, which is decorated with brightly-coloured murals dating from the 16th century. The hall is also known for the astronomical clock which adorns its gable. Of course, Ulm's Christmas Market is well worth a visit. Here you will find more than 120 decorated stalls offering gift ideas and culinary treats. After time to explore, we return to Langenau for our dinner together. (B,D)
