of the day to spend at leisure. Perhaps take a stroll through the Old Town centre, with its interesting mix of historic buildings, Art Deco architecture and prestigious museums, before continuing on to the New Town, home to most of the city's bars and restaurants.
Day 2: Liège
Liège's Christmas Village is one of the largest in Belgium and holds plenty of Christmas tradition and good cheer. Illuminated stalls and chalets offer all sorts of great gift ideas, including jewellery, handicrafts and toys, as well as a wide range of Christmas decorations and edible treats - take your pick from sausages, oysters, foie gras, chocolate, gingerbread, mulled wine and much more. Of course, if you have a fondness for Belgian chocolate, you've come to the right place - there are stalls laden with chocolate which has been flavoured with anything from ginger to Earl Grey tea.
Those feeling more energetic can take a spin on the open-air ice rink, or you can just enjoy the seasonal entertainment in the central area.
Day 3:Valkenburg & Maastricht
After a morning free in Liège, we travel by rail across the Dutch border to Valkenburg. This enchanting little hill town is built around a romantic ruined castle and is famous for its atmospheric Christmas Markets. Each year they are held in the tunnels and caves which run underneath Valkenburg, and are beautifully lit to give a magical feel. As you wander through the grotto there are many stalls with seasonal fare on offer. Returning above ground, we take the train on to Maastricht, and explore the lively Christmas Markets that are set in the shadows of the city's magnificent cathedral. You are free to browse the many stalls for exciting Christmas gift ideas, or sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of glühwein (mulled wine). We return to Liège in time for dinner.
